"Jimmy V's Espy Speech"

When I think of great speeches, I think of a speaker who takes your breathe away. Speaker that makes you want to fall down to your knees cause it was so emotional. One of the greatest speeches I think ever spoken was Jim Valvono's 1993 Espy Speech. A speech that to this day is a tear jerky for anyone who heres it. This is my favorite speech because it makes me want to never give up and continue with the life God has blessed me with.

Ethos- In this speech Jim ethical and moral credibility is very noticeable. Everyone listening to the speech knows Jimmy V has cancer and that his speech about never giving up is coming straight from his heart. He relates his battle with cancer to how people should look at life. If this speech doesn't motivate you then I don't know what will.

Pathos -Throughout this speech you can see the emotional connection between the audience and Jim. The way he delivers his speech captures the audience attention and hearts. When you listen to the emotion in his voice you can feel what he is going through. You can feel the sympathy in his voice, and the audience connects with him through his speech.

Logos- The deliverance of Jimmy V's speech is how he persuades the audience to commit to his speech. Through his passion in which he gives his facts on cancer and what he is going through it shows his reasons for why people should care about giving money to cancer research.

Austin Horn "Rise of the NBA Nerd"

Wesley Morris "Rise of the NBA Nerd"

January 16, 2013
Austin Horn

Maybe people in todays society enjoy dressing up and looking sharp. Especially when you think about professional athletes like NBA superstars. When they come out to a press conference they look like they going to have dinner with President Obama at the Whitehouse sometimes or they bring back the 1990's style. In this article Morris shows us how these superstars come out to a press conference in cardigans, shirts and ties, velvet sweaters, and even backpacks. When 15 years ago they came out with baggy shorts, hats on sideways, and Jay-Z tea shirts.

Believe Morris larger point is that fashion is a way of showing our races have changed over the years, using the NBA players as an example. When you think about how NBA stars have changed the way they dress, its changing the black people around the world are dressing. Now you don't see as many kids look like Allen Iverson in the above picture. Morris could be arguing that people these day dress the way they see people they look up to. If that is the case, everyone is starting to evolve the way they dress because they believe its cool now because the NBA players are doing it.

The NBA stars are changing the way they look because they had to obviously, but I think they could also be changing there look to show people that dressing up isn't "nerdy". I don't mind seeing celebs dressed up because I enjoy dressing the same way. But overall I believe Morris uses the NBA superstars to show how todays societies looks at celebs. We look at everything they do, and want to be like them. Also think he shows how the fashion world is changing and wanting us as readers to under stand that.
